Is Skating hitting another Golden Age?

11/06/09

About four years ago I was still in High School and students were not allowed to skateboard or longboard on campus. Skateboarding was looked down upon because it was difficult to share the sidewalk with pedestrians. Now, things are starting to change. For some reason skateboarding is getting accepted. College and high school campuses are allowing students to skateboard on campus to get to class faster.

Skating is growing like a wild fire again. I live in Fresno, CA and there is a skate park at almost every city park. I believe skating is entering another golden age. Pro skaters and longboarders are younger and more talented these days and they do not look like they are going to slow down.

When I first started riding my longboard on campus, at Fresno State, about two years ago, there were not very many people on longboards or skateboards. Now I see a couple hundred people on longboards and skateboards. More and more students seem to be ditching bikes and riding longboards.

Longboards Taking Over
11/13,09

I’ve been longboarding for almost two years now and I have started to notice the increase in the amount of people longboarding. I do most of my longboarding on campus, at Fresno State, and it seems to me like longboards have taken over as the main source of on campus transportation. There is also an increase in the amount of women that are longboarding. People are starting to ride bikes and razor scooters less. They are switching over to longboards.

It it all makes sense because bikes and scooters are a little more difficult to deal with. Bikes are inconvenient because they have to be locked up and they still can be stolen even when they are locked. It is also difficult to weave through people on a bike. They are way to big to do that and you would most likely crash into someone if you tried to. I’m not saying that you wouldn’t crash into someone on a longboard, I’m just saying it would be easier to weave through people on a longboard.

Honestly, I cannot stand those scooter things. It’s because I’m too big to ride them. I’m six feet two inches tall and I wear a size 14 shoe. My foot doesn’t fit on the scooter! I could never get comfortable on a scooter. They are just way too small for me. Scooters are also not very fast. Those things are difficult to go fast on. I always see people on bikes and longboards blow past people on scooters.

I know that larger campuses probably still use bikes as their main mode of on campus transportation, but at Fresno State things are changing. People are ditching bikes and scooters and switching to longboards.

Bearings breakdown

01/09/10

One day while I was crossing the street, on my longboard, my back wheel on my longboard shot off my trucks and went rolling into the street. When I took my longboard home I looked at my bearings and saw that they were toast. The reason why my wheel came loose was because my bearings were extremely  dirty and as a result it caused too much friction in the wheel. If your longboard ever feels like it is losing speed it is probably time to clean or replace your bearings.

Longboard City

About two weeks ago I visited Santa Cruz, Ca. The city is beautiful and is a perfect spot to longboard. Santa Cruz is full of hills and curves. Shredding thorugh Santa Cruz was extremely relaxing and fun. The city is fine was people longboarding downtown and on the sidewalk. Basically it is a longboarders paradise.

There are many different type of  longboard brands. The most common seen on websites and skate shops are Sector 9 longboards and Arbor longboards. There are other lonboard brands out there that are good quality boards, but easier on the wallet. Santa Cruz longboards, Paradise longboards and Moose longboards.
