There are numerous longboards to choose from so picking the right one is difficult if you are not familiar with longboarding. They come in many shapes and sizes, but longboards are categorized and each kind of longboard is special because they serve a certain purpose. To get the best possible riding experience you must know the type of longboard you want to fit your riding style. Pintail Longboards Beginners should focus on getting a mid-sized longboard. Mid-sized longboards range between 39in to 50in in length. These longboards are best for beginners because they are the most versatile and easiest to ride. Shorter and longer longboards serve a different purpose. Mid-sized boards are usually shaped like surfboards, pintail shape, and have loose trucks to allow riders to weave from side to side with ease. These are the best longboards to travel on. The the most important feature about these boards is that they give the rider a flexing feel. The deck flexes to give the rider more control. Mini Longboards
Short longboards or mini longboards are those that range from 24.6-34.7 inches. They are most often used in competitive longboard racing. They are best for making sharp turns. Professional racing longboards are often made from carbon fiber and not wood. There are mini longboards that are for cruising, but these boards are more difficult to ride because of the shortness of the board.
Downhill Longboards
Downhill longboards are those that range from 38-50 inches in length. These type of longboards are used for going down steep hills at high speeds. All downhill longboards are stiff, meaning the the deck does not flex like a typical mid-sized board. The non-flex feature stops the longboard from wobbling while traveling at high speeds. You will also have to tighten your trucks as well. Riding downhill sounds fun but it should be left to experienced longboarders. It is more difficult to control downhill boards because of their stiffness.
Cruiser Longboards
Cruiser Longboards are the largest longboards. They range from 60-80 inches in length and sometimes they are even longer than 80 inches. Cruiser longboards are very similar to surfboards. These boards are meant to travel at slow speeds so old-school surfing tricks can be performed. Cruiser longboards are best for people with surfing experience because the riding styles are similar. These longboards are a little difficult to control because the length of the board makes it hard to execute quick turns.
